Claritin Getting Ready To Go Over-The-Counter Or Generic
Maker of Claritin announced that it might begin selling their popular allergy drug over-the-counter (OTC) when its patent expires.

Over the past months, the media have been actively discussing the future of the marketing of the popular drug Claritin. Since the expected changes affect all consumers currently taking this prescription drug, possibly including many of your employees, this update is intended to provide some answers to the questions that your employees might be asking.

On March 8, Schering-Plough, the maker of Claritin announced that it might begin selling their popular allergy drug over-the-counter (OTC) late this year when its patent expires.

However, selling Claritin OTC is not the only option available to Schering-Plough after the patent expiration, and the company has announced that it has not yet decided which option to pursue. As an alternative to going OTC, Claritin might join the ranks of generic drugs. Whatever the decision, Claritin's competition, allergy medications such as Allegra and Zyrtec are likely to follow suit.

The prescription version of the drug will be replaced with what Schering-Plough announced to be the new and improved version of Claritin, Clarinex. According to Schering-Plough, Clarinex is superior to Claritin because it is approved to treat both indoor and outdoor allergies.

We will provide an update on the final decision, once it is available, along with any other relevant information on this issue.
